Rafting on the Yoshino River
Rafting on the Yoshino River

The Yoshino River, known as one of Japan’s top rafting spots and affectionately nicknamed “Shikoku Saburo” (“Saburo” being a traditional name for a third son), features thrilling rapids and once hosted the World Rafting Championships.

While the whitewater offers plenty of excitement, the stunning river valleys provide a calming contrast. Some courses pass directly beneath Sameura Dam, and thanks to gentler currents, they’re perfect for families with children or even dogs.

Courses are available for participants as young as elementary school age. Please check with each operator about age requirements and experience levels when booking.

Sameura Dam

A must-see when visiting Tosa Reihoku, the Sameura Dam is a massive structure that plays a vital role in protecting Shikoku.

As the largest-capacity multipurpose dam in western Japan, it has been the core of water resource management for the Yoshino River system since operations began in April 1975.

The dam helps prevent flooding, regulates river flow, supplies water, and generates electricity—earning it the nickname “Shikoku’s water barrel” for its essential support of daily life and industry.

The lake’s surface reflects stunning seasonal scenery, and the area is popular for bass fishing, water sports, and more.

Local events such as the Yamabiko Carnival (December) and the Sameura no Sato Lakeside Trail Race (November) also take place nearby.

In the Tosa Reihoku area, there are many terraced fields called tanada. They are rare in Japan, and people come from around the world to see the tanada.

From the tanada observation deck in Oishi, Motoyama, the home of a specially cultivated type of rice twice selected as the best rice in Japan called Tosa Tenku no Sato, you can take in a panoramic view of terraced fields that have remained nearly unchanged since the Yayoi period 2,300 years ago.
