Japan's most famous destinations and cities are filled to the brim with so many tourists that it can be exhausting.
If you find that to be the case, we recommend the Tosa-Reihoku area, which is surrounded by 80% forest cover.
The Tosa-Reihoku area is a place where you can relax and unwind. This is not your typical sightseeing destination, but rather one where you'll want to spend time, or even consider living.
Many locals have moved from other places to reside here, including from within Japan and even overseas.
The nearest airport, Kochi Ryoma Airport, is approximately 80 minutes from Narita and Haneda Airports (Tokyo) and 45 minutes from Itami Airport (Osaka).
(*The Tosa-Reihoku area is about 40 minutes by car from Kochi Ryoma Airport)
The region is famous for its natural beauty, and is also where you will find Outdoor Village Motoyama, an outdoor complex produced by the world-famous outdoor goods manufacture Mont-bell.
Rafting on the Yoshino River, where world championships are also held, offers a dynamic and exhilarating experience. The Oboke and Koboke Gorges also serve as rafting routes and are world-famous, attracting many visitors.
The Reihoku area is surrounded by nature and is known for its beautiful starry sky, enhanced by the lack of artificial light.
You will also find numerous terraced rice paddies, a sight emblematic of the old Japan, which are rare today.
Rice cultivated on those terraced rice paddies, Tosa Tenku no Sato, has been recognized as the best rice in Japan at awards festivals and is used for Japan Airlines' in-flight meal in first class. The rural landscape has remained unspoiled since the Yayoi Period (300 BCE-300 CE) 2,000 years ago, and certainly worth a visit.
We encourage you to visit the Tosa -Reihoku area and experience Japan's pristine, unspoiled nature.
